From The Principal

Autumn in New England is crisp air, magnificent landscapes, fresh apples (not to forget those great donuts an area farm bakes that have become a main part of my diet) and, of course, back-to school.

Getting back into the groove of adjusting to new teachers, new schedules, new expectations and new friends can create a degree of anxiety in any child. What used to be simple may suddenly be a problem of major proportion.

What should I wear today? What activities do I want to join? Will the people who were my friends last year still like me? What if my teacher is different from the one I had last year? While these questions may seem trivial to adults, they often take up space in our children's and in our student's thinking. They are perfectly normal and are usually easily resolved by talking them out. When your child's anxieties seem to become too intense, you should feel free to call a principal, teacher or a guidance counselor. We want to help and we often can.

REMINDER: Pick up at the end of the school day with your vehicle takes place behind the school. The police have asked us to try to cut down on the congestion on Main Street. The chain that prevents vehicles from entering the rear of the building is removed at 2:30pm.

NOTE: As discussed at the PTO meeting I will be sending a letter home this week requesting volunteers to help us at recess.

Principal,
Richard J. Cushing

The 2nd Annual Walk-for-Kids
Saturday, September 29th, 11am-1pm, Franklin School

The North Andover Foundation for Education has completed its 1st year and was able to present the North Andover Public Schools with a donation that has partially funded an art teaching position at the High School. Without this additional teaching position, many high school students would have experienced very large art classes. With the addition of this teaching position, students will be more adequately scheduled and class size will be more reasonable. Thank you to everyone who has supported our efforts over the past year! We are planning the 2nd annual Walk-for-Kids on Saturday Sept 29th, registration begins at 10:00am. Plus, there will be live music with The Time Flies, games and refreshments. Please join us and help us improve and enrich the public schools in North Andover! If interested in volunteering an hour of your time for the walk, email Sue Donato, dsdonato@comcast.net.

Japanese Drumming Demonstration, Tuesday, September 25th

Performers from Odaiko New England will demonstrate the ancient Japanese art form of Taiko Japanese Drumming as part of an all school program sponsored by the North Andover Schools Enrichment Council (NASEC). The program will highlight the importance of drumming in Japanese culture, demonstrate Kumi Daiko (ensemble-style Taiko drumming), and combine traditional Taiko rhythms with dynamic movement and rhythms from other musical traditions. Students will explore Kata Form (a drumming technique) and the concept of Kiai (vocalizing energy), and join the performers on stage to play the Taiko drums. For more information about the performance or the NASEC, contact Carolyn Zimmer at +1 978 683 3503. Happy drumming!

Thursday, November 15th, 2007, 7:00pm-8:45pm, High School Auditorium

North Andover's Finance Committee, Board of Selectmen, School Committee, and State Representatives and Senators will come together for a panel discussion about our current state of affairs. This is your chance. Please submit your questions to www.northandover.org/forum2007 from October 1st to 14th or mail them to NAU, 81 Prescott Street, North Andover. Representatives from citizen groups such as NAU, Seniors, NATA, TUFF and ABC will work collaboratively to select questions of wide interest to the community. Submitting questions via the website will ensure an opportunity for greater community representation, allow the panelists to answer a broad spectrum of questions, and facilitate making efficient and effective use of the under 2-hour time limit. Any unanswered questions will be given to panelists to address during the course of their regularly scheduled meetings, as well as posted at www.northandover.org.
