The North Andover School Lunch Program has played a long-standing role in providing healthy food choices for our students. In an effort to address the national concern regarding child obesity and other adolescent-related illnesses, the School Lunch Program and Kittredge School have collaborated to introduce to the students at Kittredge School a pilot Enhanced Lunch Menu. This additional menu choice will consist of higher-quality items, such as leaner meats, fresh fruits and vegetables, steamed rices, and whole grain products. A copy of this additional menu will be available with the traditional monthly lunch menu. The cost of the new enhanced meal is $2.50 and will be available beginning the week of May 17th, 2004. THIS ENHANCED MENU IS OPTIONAL AND IS AN ADDITION TO THE REGULAR MENU. Your questions and comments are always welcomed. Please contact Erika F. Murphy, Director of Food Services, at +1 978 794-1895.

The school library program has been severely impacted by budget cuts. Now, the school system would like to write a five-year long-range plan to improve our school library program. To do so, we must evaluate the current program and level of staffing to determine what needs should be addressed. The Library Long-range Committee is currently asking students in grades 5, 7, and 11; all school staff; and parents to fill out a needs assessment survey. The parent survey is available on line using the following directions. Please take a few minutes to help us by submitting the survey. If you prefer a printed version, you may pick up a copy from your school office. Please complete the survey by Friday, May 14th. Meeting to discuss Cedardale day and Variety Show details has been moved to Monday May 17th at 7PM. Cedardale Day will be Thursday June 10th, and parents are welcome. More info will be coming home in backpacks.

Please join us for the first meeting of the North Andover Allergy and Asthma Support Group on Monday, May 17th at the North Andover Middle School Library. Because May is National Asthma Month, asthma will be our topic for the evening. Dr. Kenneth Chan, M.D. from Andover Pediatrics and our school physician will be our first guest speaker. Registration for the North Andover Soccer Association 2004 fall season will begin on May 1st using our on-line registration system found on our website www.nasoccer.com. Returning or new members may register for the fall season via this link or may register at the walk-in registration on Wednesday May 26 or Tuesday June 1, at the North Andover Middle School from 7:00PM-8:30PM. After June 4th, NASA will only be accepting late registrations (with late fee for returning families) until team rosters are filled. Hosted by the North Andover Public Schools and the Mother Connection Organization on Sunday, May 23, from 11:00AM to 3:00PM, in conjunction with the Sheep Shearing Festival at the North Andover Fire Station #2 (intersection of Johnson and Salem streets across from Drummond Playground). In 10 minutes, you can register your child, have fingerprints made, have a brief videotaped interview of your child completed, and have toothprints (dental impressions which harbor scent and DNA) done - all for FREE and all materials go home with you, the parent! Registration for North Andover Booster Club Football and Cheerleading programs will be held, Wednesday, June 2nd from 6:30PM-8:30PM at the Middle School cafeteria. Any boy or girl entering grades 5th-8th by fall of 2004 is invited to participate. Birth Certificate and proof of North Andover residency are required at the time of registration (i.e.: driver's licensed, utility bill). The Franklin School currently has an opening for the position of Noon Attendant. Responsibilities include supervision of students during lunch and recess periods. Thanks to all who have been sending in cell phones and printer cartridges. Keep sending them! I am preparing a box to be shipped late next week. If you have any, send them now to make this shipment. Also, a huge thank you to The Champion Factory on Chickering Road. They donated a full box of recyclables to our cause. Don't forget that your workplace is a good source for cartridges and phones. Curbside recycling collection for North Andover residents now includes ALL #1 and #2 plastics. It costs North Andover money to incinerate our trash and plastics are one of the worst materials to incinerate because of the chemicals released. Now recycling plastics is as easy as throwing them away and saves money for North Andover!! If you have more recycling material than will fit in one red bin, you can get extra bins at the DPW on Osgood Street for $3 each. Alternatively, you can use your own unofficial plastic bin if you follow these guidelines. Each unofficial bin should contain only one type of material (i.e. all paper or all plastic) and the filled container weight should not exceed 35lbs.
